1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 SITE HISTORY
The site is located in a agricultural zone on the south eastern corner of Durham Ferry Road and
Highway 33 south east of Tracy, California. The topography for the site is flat, except for the
area built up for the railroad tracks on the west side of Highway 33. Open agricultural fields
surround the site to the south, west and east. On the north side of the site and directly across the
street of Durham Ferry are single family homes. Each of the homes has an independent water
supply via an independent well. George's Service is now primarily operated as a small
convenience store and some light duty automotive repairs are completed in the old shop. The
underground storage tanks were operated decades ago when the small service station was in full
operation.
The property and area impacted is primarily along the north side of the main building and
immediately adjacent to Durham Ferry Road. The surface area is a mixture of sand, gravel and
deteriorated asphalt. No permanent and reliable surface encapsulation is in place at the site in
the area where the petroleum release occurred. (refer to Figure 5.2)
The surface water for the area immediately surrounding the proposed remedial site, is not
channeled or directed to any one place in particular. Typically when there is rainfall the storm
water will pool up in this low-lying area and create a small pond. In this area of the facility the
water naturally percolates into the subsurface. There are no engineered surface discharge or
water distribution systems in this section of the facility.
The following chapters will discuss all of the remedial tasks of excavation, backfilling,
stockpiling, off hauling and final confirmation sampling.
1.2 SITE SPECIFIC CONDITIONS
The area of impacted concern is where one 1000 gallon gasoline underground storage tank
(UST) was previously located. This UST was used for many years for supporting the
commercial sales of gasoline to the general public and many local farmers. The actual age of the
UST was not known, however it was determined that the tank had been in service for many
years.
To keep within compliance of new federal and state regulatory requirements the removal of this
one gasoline UST, along with another was required. In completing this task it was discovered
that the UST and or piping system had failed. Elevated levels of gasoline hydrocarbons and
volatile aromatics were detected in the shallow groundwater and soils immediately under the
unit.
Upon being notified by San Joaquin County Public Health (SJCPHD), a full site investigation
was completed. All documentation and copies of analytical results are on file at SJCPHD. Soil
DEL-TECH Page 1 8/15/00
