Durham Ferry Road
Tracy CA 95376
On October 22, 1998, San Joaquin County Public Health Services,
Environmental Health Division (PHSIEHD) made a visit to the above referenced
site to meet with Henry Hurkmans of Clearwater Group, Inc. The purpose of the
meeting was to get an overview of the Soil Vapor Extraction system (SVE) which
has been installed on site by Clearwater Group, Inc. PHSIEHD has the following
comments concerning that system.
There were no calibration graduations on the dilution airflow valve. The quantity
of dilution air being allowed into the system was a rough estimate at best. In
order to accurately quantify airflow (volume) an appropriately sized in-line flow
meter shall be installed. The volume of air introduced into the destruction device
of an SVE system is used to quantify the amount in pounds of hydrocarbons
removed from the soil. Therefore, the added dilution airflow volume is important.
There was no particulate filter or moisture filter to clean the dilution air before it
entered the system. Adding particulates and moisture to the SVE system may
decrease its ability to function efficiently.
There was no temperature gauge on the V1 flow sensor. Since gas volume is a
function of temperature, a temperature gauge is necessary to be able to report
this value in standard cubic feet/meter(scfm).
Each wellhead must have: a pressure gauge, to monitor vacuum; a flow meter,
to quantify air volumes; a sampling pork, to allow for specific wellhead
contaminant level testing; a temperature gauge, to be able to standardize air flow
rates. A control valve should be installed at each wellhead_ Radius of influence
testing must be performed on each wellhead in order to determine what role
each individual well is playing in the remediation effort. To do a proper radius of
influence analysis you must isolate (turn off) all other wells, apply vacuum and
flow to the well you are testing and then measure the induced vacuum of the
other wells. If Clearwater Group, Inc. chooses to use temporary gauging to
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
