CIARWATER
G R o v P, r N c
The discharge fluids from RW-1 and RW-2 should pass through individual 1-inch
diameter PVC lines, placed in a common system utility trench The discharge lines
' should be manifolded together after they come above ground in the remedial
compound Prior to manifolding, a flowmeter/totalizer and a sample tap should be
placed in the individual lines so that the wells can be monitored individually for
water quality, flow and cumulative volume pumped After manifolding, the fluid
should be passed through an oil/water separator capable of handling a maximum
flow of 20 gpm to remove SPH from the fluid The SPH should be discharged to an
adjacent storage tank equipped with a high fluid level sensor to provide automatic
shut-off of the air compressor supplying the pumps A 55-gallon tank with double
containment should be sufficient for SPH storage The SPH should be pumped out
periodically by a licensed waste hauler for transport to an appropriate
disposal/recycling facility
The water from the oil/water separator should be plumbed through the aqueous-
phase GAC vessels The aqueous-phase GAC vessels should be designed to
accommodate flowrates up 20 gpm with influent hydrocarbon concentrations
similar to those detected in water samples collected from well RW-1, while
pumping (Table 2) and proposed well RW-2 It would be desirable to use vessels
containing approximately 1,000 lbs of GAC to reduce maintenance costs incurred
during visits to regenerate the GAC The water can be routed for discharge
following GAC treatment Sample taps should be installed in the line immediately
after the oil/water separator, between the GAC vessels, and a final effluent tap after
complete water treatment Pressure gauges should be placed in the water process
line before, between, and after the GAC vessels A flowmeter/totalizer should be
installed in line after water treatment but prior to final water disposition
Water may either be discharged to the canal (Lateral 4), located approximately 250
' feet north of the site or to adjacent orchards or reinjected outside of the
contaminated area If the water is discharged to the Lateral 4 canal, a National
Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit from the Central Valley Regional
Water Quality Control Board (CVRWQCB) will be required in addition to approval
from managers of the canal, the Banta/Carbona Water District Reinjection or
disposal to the land surface will require a General Order for Discharge of Treated
' Groundwater from a Petroleum Fuel Spill from the CVRWQCB Disposal to the
land surface at adjacent orchards will require approval from the land owner and
orchard manager This option may require a water storage tank so the orchard
' manager can control periods of water discharge The reinjection option would
require infiltration wells or trenches capable of handling a total flow of 15 gpm
These reinjection points could be located on the southwest corner of the property so
they could flush contaminants toward the extraction wells Or, an infiltration
gallery could extend from the southwest corner of the property for approximately 50
feet east, toward the proposed remedial compound
' D-107,PAR/RAP 24 February 21, 1996
