Rev o, 12,93
Standard Procedure 6
Measuring and Recording Water Levels in Groundwater Monitoring Wells
See also Site Health and Safety and Equipment Decontamination
Water Level Measurement
Water level measurements are made with decontaminated equipment. Measuring
will also proceed from the cleanest well to the one with greatest known
concentration of contaminants. The measuring tape shall be specifically made for
water level measurements, and have an accuracy of at least 11100 foot over 40
feet length. The transducer power gain is activated and the unit is lowered into the
well until the water level is encountered. If the unit encounters difficulty reaching
the water, the inferred cause is noted on the field form (e•g. well is crooked,
cracked...). The water table is indicated by an audible and visual signal. The
depth on the tape is measured from the established well head measuring point,
usually consisting of a black arrow or notch on the north side of the PVC well
riser. The depth to water is recorded, and subtracted from the elevation of the well
head measuring point. This gives the groundwater elevation in feet. The unit is
1•• decontaminated, and successive wells are measured and recorded.
•
•
•
r
