The facility was operated as a retail service
station from the early 1950s through 1991 Both gasoline
and diesel fuel were sold. The building that housed the
station office and service bays at the site remains , but is
vacant . The parcel is presently surrounded by 6-foot high
cyclone security fencing .
Land use in the area surrounding the site is of a mixed
commercial , residential , and light-industrial nature .
• In its September, 1991 preliminary assessment of soil and
groundwater contamination at the site, WaterWork Corp . of
Escalon reported that extra unleaded gasoline, regular
unleaded gasoline, and diesel fuel were each being
dispensed from its own 5 , 500 gallon capacity underground
storage tank. These tanks were located 3ust northeast of
the station office. A 350 gallon underground waste oil
storage tank was also present . This tank was located
behind (to the east of) the office .
During December of 1990 , the station's underground fuel
storage tank systems were precision tested. The extra
unleaded tank failed its test , and during January, 1991 ,
the tanks and product lines were retested using helium gas .
During the test , the extra unleaded tank developed a leak
and an estimated 300 gallons of product was released into
the fuel tank pit . The leak was reported to the San
Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health
Division (PHS/EHD) and the tank was emptied of all
remaining product on the same day. On April 11 and 12 ,
1991 , all on-site underground storage tanks and product
lines were removed. During the removal , WaterWork staff
noted the presence of moderate product odor near the tank
pit , staining near the fill -end of the diesel fuel tank and
in the product line trenches , as well as product sheen on
the groundwater standing in the bottom of the tank pit .
