pe9e 6
Each boring was advanced with a hand auger. Discrete soil
samples and a grab water sample were acquired from each
borehole. Each soil sample was collected within a 1 . 9 inch
diameter by 4 . 0 inch long clean brass sleeve fitted within
a drive sampler lowered into the borehole to a point
accessed by the hand auger . Upon being retrieved, the
drive sampler was opened and the brass sleeve removed. The
ends of each sleeve were then covered with teflon
sheeting/aluminum foal , fatted with plastic caps , and
sealed with duct tape. Each tube was then marked and
placed in an iced, insulated container for trans-portation
to Priority Environmental Labs of Milpitas , a California-
state certified hazardous waste analytical laboratory,
under chain of custody. Subsequent analyses were performed
for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Diesel (TPH-D) , Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline (TPH-G) , benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene , and total xylenes (BTEX) using EPA
Methods 3550/8015 and 5030/8015-8020 , respectively.
Grab water samples from each boring were acquired within a
clean, disposable polyethylene bailer lowered into the
borehole to a point just below the surface of the water .
Upon being returned to grade, the contents of each bailer
• were transferred into Volatile Organic Analysis (VOA) vials
and one amber glass liter bottle. Each container was
promptly covered with a teflon-lined screw cap, labeled,
and placed in an aced, insulated container for trans-
portation to Priority Environmental Labs under chain of
custody. Subsequent analyses were performed for Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Diesel (TPH-D) , Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons as Gasoline (TPH-G) , benzene, toluene, ethyl-
benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) using EPA Methods 3510/
8015 and 5030/8015-8020 (602 ) , respectively
Boring EP--5 was located eight feet east of the eastern
boundary fence of 2360 East Street near the southern
boundary of the south sidewalk of Grant Line Road The
first few inches of the soil profile consisted of asphalt
pavement and gravel . The top 4 feet of soil beneath
consisted of dark-brown silty clay followed by clay to 6
feet . Light-olive colored dense clay was present between 6
and 7 feet where an odor consistent with petroleum
hydrocarbons was present . Groundwater was encountered
beneath this dense clay layer in a dark-gray salty sand
formation with intense petroleum hydrocarbon odor . A
brown, oily sheen was present on the groundwater Later ,
when a groundwater sample was taken, the same oily material
was observed coating the bailer . Discrete soil samples
were acquired at 5 feet and 7 . 5 feet below ground surface
. (bgs) .
