further downward movement must overcome the upward
capillary forces In clayey soils , these upward forces are
significant In such cases , light , non-aqueous phase
liquid (LNAPL) contaminants will form a dome ( i a mound)
over the capillary fringe until the thickness of the LNAPL
exerts sufficient downward pressure to overcome the upward,
capillary force Until such time as this occurs , lateral
migration will occur under most circumstances
When Resna advanced their soil borings SB-9 and SB-10
between the underground fuel storage tank pit and the
product line during April of 1991 , they acquired soil
samples that were free of TPH contamination Borings SB-7
and SB-8 , advanced at northwest corner , and north central
locations were also free of TPH , however , when EPM angered
EP-1 , EP-2 , EP-3 , and EP-4 during March of 1994 , both soil
and groundwater beneath the sidewalk 3ust north of the site
were found to be contaminated
ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR THE NEXT
UAQ__RTER
1 ) The three soil borings previously requested by PHS/EHD
will be advanced beyond the eastern boundary of the site
(east of the former underground fuel storage tank pit ) in
accordance with the permit previously issued This work is
tentatively scheduled to be performed on July 14-15 , 1994
2 ) Approval for exploratory trenching on site will be
sought from PHS/EHD Trenching will be performed along the
northern site boundary , along the former product lines
between the two pump islands , in the immediate area of MW-
2 , and south of the southernmost pump island to determine
the extent of any residual contamination in these areas
If approved, the trenches will be advanced to groundwater
Discrete soil samples and grab water samples will be
acquired from the excavations and submitted for certified
laboratory analyses for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as
Diesel (TPH-D) , Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline
(TPH-G) , benzene , toluene , ethylbenzene , and total xylenes
(BTEX) If heavy oils are encountered, as in soil boring
EP-1 advanced in the sidewalk 3ust north of the site during
March, 1994 , additional analyses will be performed in an
effort to identify and quantify this material
3 ) A workplan will be submitted to PHS/EHD prior to August
1 , 1994 seeking permission to move 40 cubic yards of
previously excavated soil from 275 Grant Line Road to 2360
East Street for the purpose of aerobically biodegrading
fuel hydrocarbons contaminating a portion of the 40 cubic
yards of soil The property at 275 Grant Line Road is
located across the street from 2360 East Street and is also
Page 12
