0 0
Monitoring Well Installation Work Plan, Revision 2
March 25, 2008
SCOPE OF WORK
Pre-field Activities
Subsequent to Work Plan approval, SGI will perform pre-field activities including preparation of a
site-specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP), submittal of a Drilling Permit Application, utility
locating in conjunction with final selection of well locations, and coordination with the City. The site-
specific HASP will comply with federal OSHA regulations (29 CFR, Section 1910.120). All of SGI
personnel and subcontractors associated with the project will be required to be familiar and comply
with all provisions of the HASP. An application for the installation of each groundwater monitoring
well will be prepared and submitted along with appropriate fees to the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department. Each proposed monitoring well location will be pre-marked,
after which Underground Services Alert (USA) will be notified of pending drilling activities at the
marked locations. Additionally, a private utility locator will be contracted to check each proposed
drilling location for utilities and other subsurface obstructions. It is anticipated that USA and their
affiliated companies will mark the offsite locations of underground utilities in the vicinity of the
proposed monitoring well. Results of utility locating by both the private utility locator and USA will
be reviewed and the final location of each monitoring well will be adjusted as necessary. Prior to
the start of drilling activities, SGI will contact the City to coordinate items such as site access and
the retention of soil cores from the boring installations.
Well Installation
Preliminary locations for the three monitoring wells are shown on Figure 1. Indicated next to each
well location is the installation priority. If a well needs to be eliminated from the program because
of funding limitations, the well with the lowest priority should be eliminated first. Each well will be
installed using a sonic drilling rig equipped with a 6-inch diameter casing advanced into the
subsurface via high frequency vibrations. A continuous soil core will be recovered using a 4-inch
diameter sampler advanced ahead of the casing. (If requested ahead of time, the cores will be
boxed and provided to the City for storage and future reference.) A soil-boring log will be prepared
from observations of the recovered soil core. The soil log will include preliminary grain size
classification, color, consistency, soil lithology, degree of moisture, and estimated percentages of
gravel, sand, sift, and clay. Soil type classification will be based the Unified Soil Classification
System (USCS). Color will be based on the Munsell color chart. Well construction information will
be included on the log or on a separate well construction detail form.
Each well will be constructed to a depth of 200 feet which is located within the intake zone of the
City supply wells. The wells will be constructed using 10-foot sections of flush-threaded Schedule
40 PVC casing. The bottom 20-feet of the well will be constructed of 10-foot lengths of 2-inch-
diameter, machine-slotted (0.010-foot slots),flush-threaded Schedule 40 PVC well screen.
The Source Croup,Inc.
