12 September 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 01-0865
is depicted in Figure 5.In the trench,two-inch diameter, schedule 80 PVC piping will be routed from
the well-head at EW-1 to the proposed ground water treatment system.Following piping placement,
the trench will be backfilled with imported road-base sand, compacted and resurfaced with sod in
the grass area and concrete in the parking lot.
3.4. PROPOSED INTERIM GROUND WATER REMEDIATION SYSTEM
Utilizing a submersible air-driven pump, ground water will be extracted from EW-1 and routed
through the underground piping to a 750-gallon above ground poly storage tank(holding tank). From
the holding tank, ground water will be processed through a three-stage treatment system. The first
two stages of the pump and treat system will utilize two 2,000-pound media canister of granular
activated carbon(GAC)to address dissolved total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline(TPH-g)and
benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene and xylenes (BTEX) in extracted ground water; the final stage of
treatment will address MTBE and other fuel oxygenated compounds utilizing one 2,000-pound
canister of SunSolve,a patented material that has an affinity to absorb MTBE.A schematic diagram
of the GAC/SunSolve ground water treatment system is depicted in Figure 6,additional information
is provided in Appendix C.Treated water can be discharged either directly into the Delta Waterway
System, or through surface/land use irrigation all pending permitting or permission. The most
efficient and economically feasible method would be direct discharge into the Delta Waterway
System. AGE proposes to operate the pump-and-treat interim remediation system within the first
groundwater table until directed otherwise by the CRWQCB.
A approximately 15-foot wide by 20-foot long, chain-link, gated enclosure will be installed just
northeast of the AST enclosure to secure the ground water treatment system. The proposed
remediation system fencing enclosure is illustrated in Figure 4.
3.5. INTERIM REMEDIATION START-UP PERIOD
During the pump and treat start-up period(first two weeks of operation),grab ground water samples
will be collected on a daily basis from the influent and effluent sampling ports of the treatment
system and analyzed for TPH-g, total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-d), BTEX, fuel
oxygenated compounds, 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB) to ensure
treatment of petroleum-impacted ground water. Additionally, depth to ground water measurements
will be collected from monitoring wells, and operational parameters(ground water flow meters, fluid
level sensors, total flow indicators) will be monitored daily during the start-up period to ensure
optimal removal of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons.Following the pump-and-treat start-up period,
grab influent and effluent water samples will be collected on a monthly basis and the operational
parameters will be monitored on a weekly basis to monitor cleanup progress.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
