PHS/EHD
has not received a full report of the findings of that investigation. Please submit this report
to both PHS/EHD and to the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
(CVRWQCB). PHS/EHD has prepared the following comments for your consideration.
The site was the former location of a Shell gasoline station. The underground storage tanks
were reportedly removed in 1981.
An investigation of possible petroleum hydrocarbon contamination began in May 1990 and
consisted of a soil gas survey during which contamination was detected. The soil
investigation continued in September 1990 and consisted of the drilling and sampling of eight
soil borings, SB1 - SB8. Soil contamination was detected in six of these soil borings. The
groundwater investigation which followed later in September 1990 evidenced additional soil
and groundwater contamination with the installation of monitoring wells, MW1 - MW3.
During April 1991, the soil and groundwater investigation continued with the installation of
two monitoring wells, MW4 and MW5, the installation of three vapor extraction wells, VP1 -
VP3 and two soil borings SB9 and ASB1. Soil contamination was detected in samples
collected during the installation of the vapor extraction wells and in a sample collected from
AS131. During November 1991, two groundwater extraction wells, RW1 and RW2, and an
additional vapor extraction well, VP4, were installed. On December 12, 1991 the 500 gallon
waste oil was removed.
On January 24, 1992, vapor extraction and treatment began and operated until November
2, 1992, when treatment failure occurred and the system was shut dawn until such time as
the carbon canisters were replaced. To date, vapor extraction has not resumed.
A Division of San Joaquin Counry Heakh Care Services
