'fi 11
(r R I N
ATTACHMENT b
FIELD INVESTIGATION PROCEDURES AND
QA/QC PROCEDURES FOR SOIL SAMPLING
Drilling and Soil Sampling Methods
The boring was drilled using a Geoprobe® Direct Push Rig operated by Vironex, Inc., of;
San Leandro, California. The technology advanced a 2.0-inch-diameter rod casing while
simultaneously coring the hole. As the rod was being pushed hydraulically, a dual-walled:
sampling system was advanced which co111ected a continuous core. Samples were
collected with a 3-to-4-foot macro sampler usiing acetate liners.
Immediately after the sampler was retrieved from the Geoprobe, the acetate was cut at
the sample depth. The ends of the tube were'i covered with Teflon sheeting, capped with,:
PVC end caps, and the tube was placed in a sealable plastic bag. The sealed tubes were:
placed in a portable ice chest and cooled ',}with ice until delivery to a State-certified' I
laboratory. I
I I
Sample labels were used to identify the Soil-filled brass tubes. The label information'
included project number, project name, boring number, sample depth, date, time, and`
signature of the person preparing the samples. The same sample was visually examined
and the results of the visual observation were "recorded on the boring logs.
Preservation and Delivery of Soil Samples
Chemical preservatives were not used in the:soil,sampling program. The samples were..
stored on ice in the field and transported, in a portable ice chest to the analytical';
laboratory. The samples were delivered to the analytical laboratory on the same day of
sample collection. i
Chain-of-Custody Records
,II
Chain-of-custody records were completed before the samples were delivered to the
laboratory. One copy of these records was placed in the project file. The second copy;
accompanied the samples during transportation to the laboratory. Analytical laboratory.
personnel accepted responsibility for the samples by signing and dating the form.
Documentation Procedures
k
Orion personnel followed documentation procedures developed for site investigation
work. The procedures serve to (1) provide a record of the activities performed in the field
and (2) permit identification of samples andii tracking of their status in the field, during`
SABFS\ST0CKT0N\LTR\LTR008.DOC 5/1/01
