October 9, 1998
Mr H KnoWSJCPHS
' page 3 WORKMAN FOR ADDMONAL SUE ASSESSMENT
' QST proposes to drill two soil bongs and collect soil and groundwater samples for laboratory
analysis The scope of work for the additional site assessment is divided into four tasks described
below All work will be performed under the supervision of a California Registered Geologist.
' Field equipment and procedures are described in Appendix A
' QST personnel will mark the drilling locations and Underground Service Alert will determine if
the locations are clear of subsurface utility lines and equipment Since both of the proposed soil
' bonngs are located in the public right-of-way, city approval must be granted Encroachment
permits will be obtained from the City of Stockton and boring permits from the SJCPHS Boring
locations are contingent upon the City of Stockton, the SJCPHS approval and the location of
' utility lines If boring locations are acceptable, traffic control will be used during drilling and
sampling activities In addition, QST has prepared a site-specific health & safety plan for use
during field activities The health and safety plan is in Appendix B
TASK 2. DRILUNG AND SOIL SAMPLING
The proposed soil boring locations are shown on Figure 2 The location of the borings were
selected based on previous investigations The boring locations are contingent upon the location
of utility lines
The borings will be drilled to approximately 35 feet below ground surface, which is the
approximately 5 feet below the depth of groundwater (based on groundwater data collected from
' a nearby site) During drilling, soil samples will be collected at approximate 5-foot intervals for
geologic description, organic vapor monitoring and chemical analysis After drilling 5 feet below
groundwater and collecting soil samples, a 1 inch PVC pipe with a 5 foot slotted section at the
bottom of the pipe will be temporarily mserted into the soil The groundwater sample will be
collected from a Teflon or stauiless steel bailer, lowered through the PVC pipe The soil cuttings
' will be stored on site in drums for later disposal by others
TASK 3. LABORATORY ANALYSIS
' The soil and groundwater samples will be submitted to a state certified analytical laboratory in
accordance with local, state and federal requirements Based on field observations, select samples
will be analyzed for TPH using U S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8015
' modified for volatile hydrocarbons and for BTEX and MTBE using EPA Method 8020 In
addition, for possible future use in a health risk assessment, a selected sort sample will be analyzed
for bulk density, total organic carbon, porosity, hydraulic conductivity and percent moisture
