Dear Mr Huntley,
At your request, I am writing to discuss the preliminary results obtained from activities associated with
installation of Monitoring Well #4 (MW4) at the above mentioned facility At the present time we are
lacking only the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) result from the most recent sampling of
MW4 This letter is not a report of the assessment but should be considered as a preliminary discussion of
the results obtained to date and the ramifications gleaned therefrom.
MW4 was installed beginning 16 November 1994 and completed 30 November 1994 The delay of
i
completion resulted from mechanical failures associated with the dnllmg contractors equipment. Soil
samples were collected for laboratory analysis at the 15, 25 and 30 foot depth levels on 16 November
1994 and from the 35, 40, 45 and 46 5 foot levels on 30 November 1994 The fatal, sample at the 46 5'
depth was collected in the capillary fringe above the groundwater surface The samples were analyzed for
TPH as gasoline(TPHg)(with associated BTEX compounds),TPHd and organic lead
While not anticipating to find evidence of the presence of these materials, the soil samples were submitted
for these analyses on the off chance that they may turn out to be present We anticipated that the distance
of MW4 from the presumed source would be great enough to place it outside of the fuel impacted soils
This presumption was mostly borne out as all of the samples were found to be below the respective
reporting hnuts for the target analytes The analytical laboratory reported that sample SMW4-46 5, the
sample taken from the capillary fringe, contained TPH as motor oil at a concentration of 9 3 mglkg This
particular analysis had not been requested, however, the chemist noted the presence of higher range
hydrocarbons than diesel in the analysis and continued the chromatographic scan to capture peaks in the
range for motor oil Although not requested to do so, the laboratory ran all of the samples from the 30
1401 Halyard Dive,Saute 130.
