GeoStrategies Inc.
Gettler-Ryan Inc
January 15, 1992
Page 2
FIELD EXCAVATION ACTIVITIES
The waste oil tank was removed December 30, 1991. Tank removal and soil
sampling was witnessed by representatives of the Stockton Fire Department and
the San Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health Division
The excavation was approximately 10 foot wide by 13 foot long by 4 foot
deep An estimated total of 15 cubic yards of soil was removed and placed in
two small on-site stockpiles The tank had been breached when discovered and
had an additional 3-inch by 5-inch hole in the top of the tank. Rust covered
the entire tank The top of the tank was removed by the contractor to facilitate
removal of the contents
SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples were collected by pushing a stainless steel sample tube into the
soil until completely full The ends of each tube were covered with teflon tape
and sealed with plastic end caps. The sample was then labeled, placed in a
cooler on blue ice, entered on a Chain-of-Custody form and transported to
Western Environmental Science and Technology (WEST), a State-certified
analytical laboratory located in Davis, California
Stockpile samples were collected by removing the top 6 to 12 inches of soil,
then pushing the tube into the soil This method was repeated three times on
the same stockpile until the tube is completely full. It was then handled as
described above
Excavation Sampling
One excavation sample (CW-1) was collected from beneath the waste oil tank at
a depth of approximately 6 feet below grade (Plate 3) The sample was
analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons calculated as Gasoline (TPH-
Gasoline), Diesel (TPH-Diesel) and Oil (TPH-OA) according to EPA Method
8015 (Modified), Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes (BTEX)
according to EPA Method 8020, Halogenated Solvents (Cl HC) according to
EPA Method 8010, Oil and Grease (O&G) according to ASTM Method 5520
E&F) ICAP Metals by atomic absorption (EPA Method 7000) and Semi-Volatile
Organic Prionty Pollutants according to EPA Method 8270
729501-1
