CLOSURE REQUEST 5-31-94
DRILLING RIG, HOLLOW STEM AUGER WITH CA. SPLIT SPOON SAMPLER.
A truck-mounted drilling rig with eight inch and ten inch
hollow stem augers was used to drill and sample the borings.
The rig equipment and augers was steam cleaned prior to use, and
the sampling equipment was cleaned in the same fashion between
each sampling interval . In addition, all lubricated parts that
enter or approach the borings were lubricated with olive or Mazola
oil .
To document the soil samples taken at each interval during the
drilling activities, a WEGE field geologist prepared a boring log,
see Appendix F. The samples were described and categorized using
lithologic descriptions and the Unified Soils Classification
System.
Relatively undisturbed soil samples were collected at five-foot
intervals, at changes of lithology, and at the soil water
interface, using a California Split Spoon Sampler equipped with
four 21IX611 clean brass sleeves Borings were advanced to the
desired depth with the hollow stem auger, and then the center rod
center plug pilot bit assembly was withdrawn. The sampler was
then lowered through the auger to the bottom of the borehole and
driven 18" into the soil with a 140-pound hammer Prior to
preservation, soil samples from each interval were field-checked
for the presence of odor, vapor, and visible staining. In
addition, a vapor analysis was performed on each sample using a
hand-held photo ionizing detector (PID) which was calibrated daily
with a SO ppm gasoline vapor standard. At each sample interval,
the brass sleeve containing the soil sample with the highest PID
reading is immediately preserved and labeled
SAMPLE PRESERVATION
Once the sleeve was filled, with no head space, the sampler was
retrieved, the exposed soil at each end of the sleeve was then
field screened, with an HNu PID using a 10 . 2 ev bulb, prior to
sealing the ends with aluminum foil or a teflon liner. The tubes
were then sealed with aluminum foil or teflon liners and capped
with plastic end caps which were sealed with duct tape . The
sample sleeve was then labeled with site ID#, sample ID#, date and
time sampled and analysis to be run, prior to being placed in a
zip lock baggie and placed on ice, in an ice chest
b) Groundwater monitoring well design, installation,
development.
Monitor well design
The initial monitor wells MW1, MW2 and MW3 were installed into 10
inch hollow stem augered borings and MW4 was installed into an
eight inch hollow stem augered boring. The casing consisted of
. F480 Sch 40 PVC, machine threaded four inch for MW1, MW2 and MW3
and two inch for MW4 . Screens consisted of 0 . 01 inch slot from
page9
