EL DORADO STREET FILE REVIEW FOR
MTBE PRESENCE.
Mike I reviewed influent vapor samples obtained between January 10 and November 23,
1994 for evidence of MTBE and found none These results are from the WEGE
chromatograph (Schimadzu FID) that was designed for WEGE for BTEX and TPHg
analysis Examples of MTBE run on this instrument from samples obtained from a Bay
Area site show MTBE has a retention time (RT) of 174 to 176 on our gas
chromatograph see pages 12-20.
I also located groundwater sample results that Superior Laboratory indicated an unknown
single peak in MW2 sample We resampled this well and had Superior identify this peak
Superior used EPA method 8240 and qualified this compound as 1,2 Dichloroethane
WEGE also had Superior run 8240 identifications on vapor samples obtained from MW2
and the influent of the vapor extraction system - no MTBE was indicated See pages 1-
11.
Review of the groundwater flow direction for these site shows that the groundwater flows
predominately to the east with occasional flows to the northeast and west This site was
investigated to 60 feet below surface where all samples were below laboratory lower
detection limits for TPHg, BTEX It is highly unlikely that the MTBE UNOCAL
discovered in groundwater samples from the 80 foot depth of their site is related to the
Wickland site Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you in this matter
Sincerely,
George Converse
Project Geologist
Cc John Margow f, Wickland Properties
1
