ATTACHMENT B
FIELD AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Collection of Soil Samples
Soil samples were collected using 2-inch diameter brass sample liners from undisturbed soil
removed from the excavation by a backhoe bucket. When possible a slide hammer lined with
2-inch diameter brass sample liners was used. The soil samples were retained in the brass
liners and capped with Teflon® sheets and plastic end caps. The samples were then labeled,
placed in sealed plastic bags, and transported on ice to the analytical laboratory, accompanied
by the appropriate chain-of-custody documentation.
Laboratory Analyses
Selected samples were analyzed for the presence of total petroleum hydrocarbons calculated
as gasoline and diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d) by EPA Method 8015 modified and 8260, and
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020 and 8260.
Selected samples were analyzed for the presence of fuel oxygenates including tert-butanol,
methyl tert-butyl ether (MtBE), di-isopropylether (DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (EtBE), and
tertiary amyl-methyl ether (TAME), by EPA Method 8260. Stockpile samples were analyzed
for total lead using EPA Method 6010. A California State-certified analytical laboratory
performed all laboratory analyses.
Groundwater Sample Collection and Analysis
The groundwater grab sample was collected using a disposable bailer dropped into the
bottom of the over-excavation excavation. The water was decanted into new mason jars,
labeled and transported on ice to the analytical laboratory, accompanied by the appropriate
chain-of-custody documentation. The groundwater sample was analyzed for TPH-g by EPA
Method 8015, BTEX and MtBE by EPA Method_&ON. A California State-certified analytical
laboratory performed all laboratory analyses. 7ZO
911Oil IAIRepce B - 1 07/13/99
