L
Site Background Information: Quick N Save 42
AGE-NC Project No. 01-0815
UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK.REMOVAL
f
Three underground storage tanks (USTs), associated piping, and a dispenser island were removed
from the site on 06 October 1999. Seven soil samples were collected from beneath the UST's, four
soil samples were collected from beneath the dispenser area, two soil samples were collected from
piping trenches, and six discrete soil samples were collected from the excavat4 soil stockpile.
Methyl tertiary-butyl ether(MTBE) and/or tertiary butanol(TBA)were detected in each of the soil
l samples collected from the stockpiled soil. Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline
R
(TPH-g)were detected at concentrations as high as 2,100 milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg)beneath
the eastern end of the center UST location. Volatile aromatics compounds benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes(BTEX) were detected at concentrations as high as 170 mg/kg from the
same sample location.
Approximately 150 cubic yards of soil were excavated during removal of the UST's. The excavated
soil was stockpiled on-site.
INTERIM SOIL,EXCAVATION
On 12 May2000, approximately 372 cubic yards of significantly petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted
soil were excavated from the former UST location. Excavated soil was stockpiled on-site and
covered with plastic sheeting. Soil samples were collected from the base and each side wall of the
excavation at a minimum, interval of one sample every 20 linear feet. Samples were also collected
from the stockpiled soil.
i
a
TPH-g was detected in soil samples collected from the floor of the excavation at concentrations of
9.9 mg/kg(Floor S)and 4.2 mg/kg(Floor N). BTEX compounds were detected at concentrations as
high as 0.67 mg/kg (xylenes). TPH-g and BTEX compounds were not detected in any of the soil „
samples recovered from the walls of the former UST area.
MTBE was detected in sample Floor N and Floor S at concentrations of 2.3 mg/kg and 15 mg/kg, k
respectively,by EPA method 8260B. MTBE was detected in only one soil sample recovered from
the walls of the excavation area (South Wall) at a concentration of 0.000012 mg/kg.
Stockpile soil samples contained TPH-g at concentrations as high as 420 mg/kg;BTEX compounds
were detected at concentrations as high as 30 mg/kg.MTBE was detected in only one stockpile soil
sample (SP1A-B) at a concentration of 0.25 mg/kg.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
t 1
