er,
PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY a
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DMSION
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor- Stockton, CA 95N
209/468-3420 '
STEPHEN VALENTINE AUG 0 3 1998
STEVE & GENES SERVICE
6232 HEMET AVE
STOCKTON CA 95207
RE: STEVE& GENES SERVICES SITE CODE: 2080
2315 N EL DORADO ST
STOCKTON CA 95204
The San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has
reviewed the"First Quarter 1998 Groundwater Monitoring Report" dated the June 23, 1998
prepared by Wm. J. Hunter&Associates for the above referenced site. The current water
elevation is above the screened interval of all six monitoring wells (MW), including MW-4, MW-5,
and MW-6 which until now had been below screen. Therefore the results of the analytical tests
are most likely diluted. The analytical results of the water samples from all six MWs continue to
indicate the presence of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH)as gasoline, and aromatic
hydrocarbons as Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl-Benzene, and Xylenes (BTEX), with the water sample
from MW-3 exhibiting the highest concentration. The oxygenate Di-isopropyl ether(DIPE)was
found only in the water samples from MW-3 and MW-4 but had been detected in the water
samples from all wells except MW-5 in the last quarterly sampling event. Analysis for Tertiary
Butyl Alcohol (TBA)was not performed this quarter but this contaminant was found in the water
samples from MW-3 and MW-4 collected during the last sampling event. MTBE has not been
detected.
PHS/EHD concurs with Wm J. Hunter&Associate's recommendation to reduce quarterly
sampling of the monitoring wells to semi-annual basis. PHS/EHD disagrees with the
recommendation to begin soliciting proposals for remediation at this time. The vertical extent of
the contamination plume has not been defined. PHS/EHD recommended additional work to
define the vertical extent of the contamination in a letter dated March 16, 1998. A proposal for
corrective action is premature since the lateral and vertical extent of the contamination plume has
not been defined. Submit a workplan to define the vertical extent of the contamination to
PHS/EHD October 3, 1998.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jeffrey Wong at(209)468-0335.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
"- I- ,cr
Jeffrey Wong, EHS, Trainee Margaret Lagorio, REHS
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV Supervisor
JW:lb
c: RWQCB, Central Valley Region -Mark List
c: Wm.
