The work was
' performed under the direct supervision of William Hunter, a
Registered Geologist from our firm, as directed by you.
The workplan, which was prepared in accordance with prior
' agreement by your staff, was for the purpose of determining the
vertical extent of some residual waste oil constituents
encountered during prior work. Four (4) soil borings had been
previously placed on the property; the results of that work
revealed that any contamination caused by the waste oil tank was
confined within the limits of those soil borings. However, minor
' amounts of BTEX & TPH--G were detected in a soil sample at 36' in
soil boring #2.
A meeting held between the owner, the consultant, and the EHD
' staff resulted in an agreement to place one (1) soil boring in
the middle of the site of the removed waste oil tank to determine
the vertical extent of contamination. In the process of conduct-
ing that work, obvious soil contamination was encountered at 36'
below grade. Based upon visual evidence & odor, the contami-
nation appeared to be due to gasoline components, and not waste
oil. Contamination was still evident at the programmed depth of
' 40' ; after discussions with the County representative, it was
agreed to continue operations until the vertical extent of the
contamination was determined. At a depth of 60' below grade,
' groundwater was encountered; contamination was still present. At
this time the County staff recommended that the soil boring be
converted to a groundwater monitoring well. After consulting
' with Mr. Valentine, it was decided to deepen the auger hole to
70' , and convert to a groundwater monitoring well.
I
' 1
