Creologcral7"ecluucslnc Page 5
Additional Site Characterization Work Plan
Project No 724 2
• June 27, 2002
2.4 Soil Boring and Monitoring Well installation
' Soil boring permits will be secured as necessary and the local regulatory agency will be
notified 48 hours prior to commencing work The subsurface will be cleared of
' underground utilities by notifying Underground Service Alert
The boring for the shallow/inter-mediate wells will be drilled using an 8 inch outside
diameter continuous flight hollow stem auger (HSA) owned and operated by V&W Drilling
(C57# 720904) iMu d r -r"r,
The following procedure will be used to drill the deep borehole for MW-301 A set of 12
inch hollow stem augers will be drilled down toadept it o proximately 130 feet A 6
inch steel casing will then be placed in the borehole and a cement grout used to seal the
' annulus The annular seal will be allowed to set for 24 hours and then the casing will be
bailed/flushed of all fluids/cuttings to ensure no cross contamination takes place A 5 inch
diameter mud rotary bit on drill rods will be lowered down the inside of the casing and
' drilling continued Th drilling inud will be a mix of bentonite gel with a small amount of
polymer added to aid in reducing oss of drilling mud to the formation The mud is pumped
down the inside of the drill rods and up the borehole/casing A portable mud pit is placed
around the top of the steel casing to catch mud and cuttings as they come out of the hole
When the terminal depth is achieved, the mud will be flushed out and stored in a roll off
' bin A new batch of mud will be mixed and the hole flushed of all cuttings and
contaminated fluids When a 2 inch PVC well casing is set in the borehole, fresh water will
be circulated through the casing to continue flushing residual mud and cuttings out of the
' hole This flushing will take place after the filter and seal are set, but before grout is
pumped into the hole via tremmie pipe The mud rotary rig is also owned and operated by
V&W Drilling (C57# 720904)
' The remainder of the deep boreholes will be drilled utilizing a combination of 8 inch hollow
stem auger with a 4 inch mud drill bit advanced inside the augers
' Soil cuttings will be stored in 55 gallon drums or roll off bins and will be immediately
removed once the drilling is complete A professional geologist under the supervision of a
licensed registered geologist will direct all drilling and well construction
2.4.1 Soil Sampling Procedure
' Borehole MW-301 will be free drilled to a depth of 130 feet since it will be drilled adjacent
to MW-201 (logs on file) To better define the geology in the drilled interval, the borehole
' will be continuously logged from 130 feet to final depth of up 1q..Lfeet bgs For the
remainder of the well sets soil samples will be collected for geological evaluation at five-
foot intervals A boring log providing sediment description using the USCS and field
