15 August 2002
AGE-NC Project 02-0946
Page 5 of 7
4.1 EXPLORATORY EXCAVATIONS
AGE did not locate any USTs in the four exploratory trenches; however, three of the four trenches
(T-1, T-2 and T-4) contained an assortment of waste material, including:
• Building materials - sheet metal, lumber, bathroom fixtures;
• Automobile parts - body work and engine parts;
• Glass fragments; and
• Various unidentified empty containers.
The waste material was encountered from near surface grade to total depth of each trench identified
above. In addition, stained soil was encountered in the three trenches at a depth of approximately 10
to 12 feet bsg. A strong petroleum hydrocarbon-like odor was noted in the stained soil.
r--- n pT 11v
Debris was not observed in trench T-3 from near surface grade to the total depth of 6 feet bsg. vv .
4.2. FIELD EVIDENCE OF HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
A petroleum hydrocarbon-like odor was detected from all soil samples collected from boring PB-2;
the odor was strongest in samples collected between 10 and 20 feet bsg.
Organic vapor was detected by PID in all soil samples collected from boring PB-2 at concentrations
ranging from 14 parts per million (ppm) in samples PB2-25 and P132-30 to 3,718 ppm(PB-2-15);
organic vapor was not detected in samples from borings PB-1 and PB-3. PID readings are included
in Appendix C.
4.3. ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL SAMPLES
Soil samples PBI-25, P132-30, PB2-40, PB3-10 and P133-20 were analyzed for TPH-g, BTEX
compounds and MTBE. Target analytes were not detected in the five analyzed soil samples.
Analytical results of soil samples are summarized on Table 2. The laboratory report (CTEL
Laboratory IDs 0207-150-5, 0207-150-11, 0207-150-13, 0207-150-14 and 0207-150-16), quality
assurance and quality control (QA/QC) report and chain-of-custody forms are included in
Appendix D.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
