21 May 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 02-0930
' During drilling, sample duplicates were monitored"for the presence of organic vapor using an organic
vapor meter equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID:Thermo Environmental 5 80A, 10.0 eV,
calibrated to isobutylene)and were visually described on boring logs in accordance with the Unified
Soil Classification System (USCS). Boring logs are included as Appendix A.
Following sample collection, probe borings were backfilled to surface grade with Portland cement.
EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
Prior to sample collection, the Geoprobe soil sampling equipment was thoroughly rinsed with clean
' water after being washed with a solution of Alconox. Geoprobe rods were thoroughly cleaned prior
to soil probe boring advancement.
ANALYTICAL METHODS
S
The soil samples were transported to McCampbell Analytical, Inc. (MAI), a DHS-certified
laboratory, for analysis. Fifteen soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons
quantified as gasoline (TPH-g), diesel(TPH-d) and motor oil (TPH-mo) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015 Modified. In addition, soil sample B5-15 was analyzed for volatile organic compounds
(VOCs)and semi-volatile organic compounds(S VOCs)in accordance with EPA Methods 8260 and
8270, respectively.
FINDINGS
Soil descriptions were utilized to construct the site geological model; laboratory analysis of soil
samples was utilized to assess the petroleum hydrocarbon-impact on the soil.
SOIL PROFILE
Generally, moderate yellowish brown, moderate brown and gray, dry to damp, clayey silt, silty clay
and lean clay were encountered from surface grade to approximately 20 feet bsg. Silty to poorly
graded fine sand was encountered in probe boring B-3 between 10 and 20 feet bsg; poorly graded
sand was encountered at 10 feet bsg in probe boring B-1 and silty sand/sandy silt was encountered
at 15 feet bsg in probe boring B-5. Fill material was detected at 5 feet bsg in probe boring B-2.
Boring logs are included in Appendix A.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
