M
Site Health and Safety Plan
California Tank Lines Facility
Sierra-Pack Project No. 96-620.01
:I
6.0 JOB HAZARD SUMMARY
There are potential hazards associated with the work to be completed at the CTL facility.
These include:
0 Chemical Hazards
• Physical Hazards
thermal stress
fire and explosion
electrical hazards
hot work
confined space
noise
• General Safety Hazards
Below, each of the foregoing hazards are discussed in detail. Even though the concentrations
of petroleum hydrocarbons including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes are expected
to be low, Sierra-Pacific personnel will plan for their presence in the working environment
during all phases of work on this site .
6.1 Chemical Hazards
Toxic substances can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. They can
enter by more than one route, cause damage at the point of entry, and cause organ damage
after being metabolized. The most likely tonic substances to be encountered at the CTL site
are benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes. Table A4 lists the contaminants and their
respective exposure levels.
Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. 10
