26 June 1992
(GeoAudit CV 45-49C5-1. 10)
(Alpha Analytical Laboratories in Ukiah) . The samples were analyzed
for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH as gasoline and diesel) and
volatile aromatics (BTE&X) .
Soil from the second brass tube was extruded and screened for the
presence of organic vapors using a photo-ionization detector (PID:
Thermo Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene) . The
soil was then described in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System (see Boring Log) .
The boring was completed as a groundwater monitoring well by the
installation of 0. 020 screen PVC liner from 35 to 54 . 5 feet.
Bentonite pellets were used from 33 to 35 feet and the well was
backfilled to the surface with Portland Cement.
On 4 June 1992 a water sample was collected from the monitoring
well. A PVC bailer was used to surge and purge the well, and
approximately 7 gallons of water were removed from the well to
stabilize temperature, pH and conductivity. The water was stored in
a 55-gallon drum on-site. A water sample was then collected using
a disposable plastic bailer. The sample was collected in two 40 ml
EPA vials and 1 liter amber bottles. The water sample was analyzed
for TPH as gasoline, TPH as diesel and BTE&X.
FINDINGS
The boring penetrated interbedded clay, silty clay, and clayey
sand. The upper five feet of the soil profile consists of backfill
material and gravel. Clayey sand and sandy silt are present from 6
to 20 feet, and silty to gravelly clay and clayey sand are present
from 21 to 54 . 5 feet. Water was encountered at about 43 feet in the
boring (see boring logs) .
A moderate to strong hydrocarbon odor was present in soil samples
B1-35 to B1--50, but no volatile organic vapors were detected by the
PID. A slight hydrocarbon odor was also present in the water
sample.
Toluene was detected in all three soil samples, ranging from 0. 0075
to 0. 014 Ag/g (Table 1) . Xylenes were detected only in sample B1-35
at 0. 0097 µg/g. No benzene, ethylbenzene or TPH were detected in
any of the soil samples.
• In the water sample, TPH as gasoline was detected at 260 µg/L (ppb)
and TPH as diesel was detected at 310 µg/L (Table 1) . No BTE&X
contamination was detected.
