Interim Emergency Remedial Action/Monitoring Well Installation Work Plan Page 9 Former Union Facility,-Cutter Lumber Project No 102 2 May 20, 1997 ' 3.2.2 Monitoring Well Development After the well sealing materials have set (>48 hours) the wells will be developed (using mechanical surging and pumping, or balling methods) until a clear stream of water is generated All development water will be containerized in 55 gallon DOT approved ' containers and stored on site until their disposition can be arranged 3.2 3 Monitoring Well Sampling ' It is proposed that initially, groundwater samples be collected from each of these wells on a quarterly basis for a period of one year and depth to water measurements be made on a ' monthly basis The following section documents the groundwater sampling protocol The monitoring wells will be sampled no earlier than 24 hours after development A ' groundwater sampling event will then proceed as follows The well is unlocked and opened The groundwater level will then be measured in each well before any purging of that well occurs A groundwater level measuring tape with an electronic sensor will be used This tape has an accuracy to the nearest one-one hundredth of a foot If floating product is suspected, then a bailer will be lowered into the well to determine the product/water interface The presence of floating product will affect water elevations and sampling protocol The sounding tape will be decontaminated before and between sounding each of the wells ' Stagnant water in the well casing is purged using a stainless steel bailer belayed with a servo actuated electric reel The rate of well purging will be monitored Each well will ' be purged of at least three casing volumes and then purged until the groundwater parameters (temperature, conductivity, and pH) had stabilized indicating that water, representative of actual aquifer conditions, is entering the well Groundwater parameter ' stabilization is by three successive temperature pH and conductivity readings within 10% Before a sample is collected, the weIl's water level is allowed to recharge to at least 80% ' of its initial level A bailer is then used to collect each sample Bailer cleanliness is assured by collecting a bailer blank (pouring distilled water through the bailer and collecting it in a VOA vial) prior to collecting the analytical sample Before and in between uses, all sampling equipment will be washed using a portable steam cleaner Disposable gloves will be worn by the sampling technician while collecting all samples and changed between the collection of each sample to reduce the potential for cross- contamination Extreme care will be exercised while collecting samples to prevent agitation of the water contained in the bailer Water samples will be transferred from the bailer into 40 ml VOA vials preserved with hydrochloric acid and I liter capacity amber glass bottles 2937 Veneman Ave,##B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc Phone(209) 569-0293 Modesto,CA 95356 Fax(209)569-0295
