1
' 23 Crosso
C ntamination Prevention
All sample equipment (coring sampler, brass tubes etc ) and auger (drilling rod, drilling
bits, & auger, etc ) will be thoroughly cleaned before being used and between uses
' Wash water may be containerized in DOT approved 55 gallon drums, labeled, and
stored on site until their disposition can be arranged Plastic gloves will be worn during
sample collection and changed between all samples
' 2.4 Chain of Custody
' Chain of Custody (CofQ forms are legal documents used to track the handling of
samples All dates, times, persons and their companies will be listed from the time the
sample is collected to its ultimate disposal A CofC form will be filled out for all
' samples collected The CofC will be tracked to ensure sample integrity
' 2.5 Sample Analysis
' Samples will be analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylenes (BTEX),
EPA methods 8020, and for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline and diesel, EPA
method 5030/8015m The analyses will be performed by Sherwood Laboratories of
Hilmar., California State Certification #1400
2.6 Data Reduction
Analytical data will be integrated with the geological data gathered during field
investigation.
2.7 Soil Boring Installation
The soil borings will be drilled using hand auger drilling equipment Soil cuttings will
either be containerized in DOT approved 55 gallon drums, labeled or lain on and
covered by plastic sheeting, and stored on site: until their proper disposition can be
arranged Soil samples will be collected for geological and analytical evaluation at five
foot intervals. Soil samples will be collected in 6 0 inch brass liners using a 2.0 inch
modified California split spoon sampler All soil samples will be sealed with aluminum
foil, capped, labeled and placed In a cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory
following Chain of Custody protocol
Because eve soil collected w
every sample p ill not be submitted for laboratory analysis, a
screening process will be used to gather additional information through field
observation noting sediment type, especially gram size and clay content, moisture
content, visible evidence of contamination, z.e , color change due to reduction of iron or
discoloration from hydrocarbons and other pollutants, and the readings above
I
