s
If soil samples collected from the capillary fringe of the water table
are found to contain diesel or gasoline constituents, then
groundwater samples will be collected down gradient of the
excavation using a modified hydropunch. The hydropunch method
allows the sampling of groundwater without the necessity of well
installation. The modified hydropunch employs a probe made of 2"
steel pipe equipped with a detachable penetration cone. The probe is
driven into the formation material in advance of hollow stem augers.
The probe is then retracted from the detachable penetration cane to
expose a screen in the potential water bearing zone. Water samples
are collected with a stainless steel bailer which is introduced into the
probe. Exact locations for collection of groundwater samples with the
hydropunch will be made in the field based on results of analyses of
soil samples. Hydropunch samples will permit a better
understanding of the nature and extent of chemicals in the shallow
groundwater prior to the installation of monitoring or extraction
rm wells.
Water samples obtained with the stainless steel bailer will be
immediately transferred to clean volatile organic analysis (VOA)
vials, filling each completely. Care will be taken to minimize any
agitation of the water sample. Each sample vial will be then capped
with a Teflon septum cap such that zero headspace is achieved, and
no air bubbles are visible when inverted.
Groundwater for TPH analysis will be collected using the bailer and
`. transferred into a 1-liter amber glass container. All the containers
. (VOA vials and 1-liter amber glass)used will be labeled with the well
number, date, time, sampler's initials, location, and analysis
required, and chilled in a cooler. Each sample will be logged on
chain-of-custody forms and in a field book.
The samples will be held in the cooler, accompanied by the
appropriate chain-of-custody forms.
S=WeAnaLYda
Soil samples will be analyzed for TPI'!-Diesel and Gasoline by EPA
Method 8015 modified and BTX&E by EPA Method 8020. Soil samples
- to be analyzed-.for Z'PH_will-be_-prepared_by-EPA_Method-3550-using- -------------=----- --=--
-- --- —-- sonication. Soil samples to be analyzed for BTX&E will be prepared
using EPA Method 5030 (purge and trap). Total Petroleum
- hydrocarbons in soil samples will be analyzed and characterized by
Gas Chromatography/Flame Ionization Detection (GCFID) with a
fused capillary column.
2-5
