I
Mr Steve Schneider
SJCPHS
December 15, 1992
Page 2
A portion of each discrete soil sample was retained by the Groundwater Technology geologist for
headspace analysis for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a photoionization detector (PID)
If any discrete samples exhibited elevated PID headspace readings, indicative of VOC impacts, then the
discrete sample was to be analyzed individually However, no elevated PID readings were detected in
any of the sod samples collected
The laboratory reports are included as Attachment A of this letter The attached table provides a
summary of the results of sod sample analyses As shown by this table, none of the soil samples
collected exhibited concentrations of TPH-as-Gasoline or BTEX above Method Detection Limits (MDLs)
The MDL for TPH-as-Gasoline is 10 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) The MDL for BTEX is 0 005 mg/kg
for benzene, 0 005 mg/kg for toluene, 0 005 mg/kg for ethylbenzene, and 0 015 mg/kg for total xylenes
Concentrations of TPH-as-Diesel Fuel ranged from below the MDL (10 mg/kg) to 530 mg/kg Of the 26
sod samples analyzed, 8 samples, representing approximately 1,200 cubic yards of sod, were below the
MDL for TPH-as-Diesel Fuel Eleven samples, representing approximately 1,700 cubic yards of sod,
exhibited concentrations of TPH-as-Diesel Fuel from 10 to 50 mg/kg The remaining 7 samples,
representing approximately 1,100 cubic yards of sod, exhibited concentrations above 50 mg/kg, but not
exceeding 530 mg/kg Most of the samples exhibiting TPH-as-Diesel Fuel over 50 mg/kg were actually
below 150 mg/kg with the exception of one sample (SP-5-2)
i
Recommendations regarding the disposition of stockpiled sods are being forwarded to SJCPHS and The
California Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), Central Valley Region, under separate cover
If you have any questions regarding the soil sampling, or the attached results, please call either Mr
Dean Willis of O'Melveney & Myers at (213) 669-6000 or me at (510) 671-2387
Sincerely,
GROUNDWA ER T OGY, INC
Richard M Tho asser
Project Manage
Hydrogeologist
Attachments
cc Ms Elizabeth Thayer, RWQCB Central Valley Region
Mr Dean Willis, O'Melveney & Myers
Mr Larry Chapman, Manna Pro Corporation
RTMPSPSR 7
GROUNDWATER
TECHNOLOGY,INC
