current Cal/OSHA PEL is listed as 100 ppm for the three isomers (ortho, <br /> meta, and para) collectively and the STEL is 150 ppm. <br /> 4.1.3 Volatile Organic Compounds <br /> 4.1.3.1 cis-1,2-Dichloroethene <br /> Cis-1,2-DCE is a colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor. This <br /> compound causes irritation of the eyes, corneal opacity, central nervous <br /> system depression, nausea, vomiting, dermatitis, liver and kidney <br /> damage, and cardiovascular system damage. This compound is a <br /> potential carcinogen. The Cal-OSHA PEL is 200 ppm. <br /> 4.1.3.2 Tetrachloroethylene <br /> Tetrachloroethylene appears as a colorless liquid with a mild, chloroform- <br /> like odor. This compound is an irritant to the eyes, nose, and throat <br /> causing nausea, flush face and neck, vertigo, dizziness, incoherence, and <br /> causes liver damage with possible carcinogenic effects. The Cal/OSHA <br /> PEL is listed as 25 ppm for an eight-hour time weighted average, or 100 <br /> ppm for the STEL. <br /> 4.1.3.3 Trichloroethylene <br /> Trichloroethylene appears as a colorless liquid, commonly dyed blue, with <br /> a chloroform like odor. This compound is irritant to the eyes, skin. <br /> Absorption of this compound causes vertigo and fatigue. Ingestion of this <br /> compound causes tremors, nausea, and vomiting. Skin or eye contact <br /> causes cardiac arrhythmia and liver damage with possible carcinogenic <br /> effects. The Cal/OSHA PEL is listed as 25 ppm for an eight-hour time <br /> weighted average, or the STEL is 100 ppm. <br /> 4.2 PHYSICAL HAZARDS <br /> Physical hazards associated with site activities include slips, trips, falls, <br /> operation of the drill rig, vibration and noise,loose objects near moving <br /> drill rig parts, underground utilities, pinching and exposure to sharp <br /> objects when handling equipment, fire protection, heat stress, and <br /> pedestrian traffic. <br /> Exposure to these types of hazards may result in eye abrasions, <br /> contusions, lacerations, fire hazards, and heat-stress concerns. The <br /> potential for such hazards necessitates the use of gloves, safety shoes or <br /> boots that meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z41.1, eye <br /> 5164.00-3/4/03 <br /> ERM <br /> HASP CANON 9 <br />
