4.1 Tank Removal
Triangle, Inc., of Sacramento, California{Tnangle) began the excavations to remove the single-
wall USTs on August 18, 1993. The pavement overlying the old tanks was cut and removed,
and the fill material in the tank cavity was excavated to the tops of the USTs. The pea gravel
' surrounding the fiberglass UST and the sand surrounding the steel USTs were removed from the
cavity and stockpiled on-site
' On the morning of August 19, 1993, dry Triangle laced d ice in the four USTs to reduce the
g P
' possibility of combustion during removal and transportation. Fuel vapors in the tanks were
monitored for the presence of explosive conditions by Mr. Bruce DeAlberts of Triangle Vapor
levels were determined to be within acceptable limits for removal by Ms Letitia Briggs of the
San Joaquin County Public Health Services-Environmental Health Division (PHS-EHD)
Triangle removed each UST by attaching chains to the top of the tank and lifting it with an
excavator. After removal, each tank was inspected by Ms Briggs and Roux All tanks
appeared to be in good condition. The four USTs were loaded onto Service Transport Lines
' trucks and transported from the Site to Triangle's yard in Sacramento, California for cleaning
The UL numbers for the removed tanks are included on Figure 2.
' 42 Soil Sampling Below Removed Tanks
' Soil sampling in the former UST cavity was done on August 20, 1993. Eight soil samples were
collected from the bottom of the excavation at a depth of 16 ft. bgs Two samples were
collected below each of the removed USTs (Figure 3)
' Soil from the bottom of the excavations was brought up to the surface in the bucket of the
excavator All soil samples were then collected in 2-inch (in.) diameter by 4-in long, clean
stainless steel tubes Six to twelve inches of soil were scraped away from the surface A
stainless steel tube was driven with a rubber mallet into the newly exposed soil surface and filled
' ROUX ASSOCIATE%INC. ® 3 Doc #A158W01I7
