The air sparging pilot test was performed to evaluate
the feasibility of using air sparging technology to remediate hydrocarbon-affected soil and
ground water beneath the site. Work included constructing one air sparge well and three
sparge monitoring points, performing two 1-day sparge tests and one 1-day combined air
sparge and vapor-extraction test, and submitting water and air samples for laboratory
analyses, and evaluating the data This report summarizes our conclusions and
recommendations with regard to the feasibility of aquifer sparging at this site
l
Air sparging involves infecting pressurized air below the water surface to "strip" dissolved
hydrocarbons from the ground water to the vadose zone and remove residual hydrocarbons
adsorbed to soil within the saturated zone and the capillary fringe Air bubbles that exit the
sparge well move vertically and horizontally through the saturated soil column stripping
dissolved hydrocarbons from ground water Hydrocarbon vapors entrained in the air
bubbles rise through the saturated zone into the vadose zone Control of off-gas in the
. 30003-8
