I
Working to Restore Nature
I
Well boxes with traffic rated covers were installed at each vapor extraction well and air
sparge well To allow for future expansion, a limited number of air sparging pipe stub-out
connections were installed subgrade to connect any future air-sparging wells Collection
system piping will transmit extracted vapor from the wells to the remediation compound
Subsurface piping will direct extracted vapor from the wells to a catalytic oxidizer located
r at the remediation compound VES components located in the remediation compound will
include a vapor extraction blower that will extract vapor from the wells through the
subgrade piping, a flow indicator that measures extracted flow, a condensate separator to
remove entrained droplets of moisture; the catalytic oxidizer, a set of associated piping,
control valves, instrumentation and controls, a remote monitoring system to transmit the
status of process variables and any alarm or upset conditions, and a fenced remediation
compound to preclude public access.
A 100 scfm catalytic oxidizer is proposed to abate hydrocarbon vapors extracted from the
vapor extraction wells The catalytic oxidizer will be replaced with an activated carbon
adsorption system in the future, when influent hydrocarbon concentrations decrease to levels
that make it cost effective and safe to install and operate a carbon system
52 Groundwater Remediation System
The proposed groundwater remediation system will consist of an air sparging system Air
sparging involves the infection of compressed air into groundwater through air sparging wells
that contain a 1- to 2-foot section of slotted screen, installed within the water-bearing zone
of concern Air sparging involves injecting pressurized air below the water surface to "strip"
dissolved hydrocarbons from the groundwater to the vadose zone and remove residual
hydrocarbons from the saturated soil. Air bubbles that exit the sparge well move vertically
and horizontally through the saturated soil column "stripping" dissolved hydrocarbons from
30003-13 10
