- "%TC
r
A S S O C I A T E S I N C .
L
2.1 Soil Boring Advancement and Sampling
-+ Drilling activities at the site were performed by V & W Drilling (State C57 license no. 720904)
in a phased approach utilizing two different drilling methodologies. The two soil borings in the
vicinity of the former remote fill pipeline were advanced using a truck mounted Geoprobe0 rig
`- employing direct push technology. The remaining borings were subsequently advanced using a
truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 8-inch outside diameter hollow stem augers.
Remote Fill Pipeline and Diesel Tanks
On February 16, 1999, ATC supervised the advancement of two soil borings (SB 1 and SB2) in
the vicinity of the former remote fill pipeline's fill-end. Drilling was performed by employing
GeoprobeO method of direct push technology (DPT).
Soil Borings SB 1 and S132 were completed at depths of 20 feet bgs. Soil boring SB 1 was
advanced at an approximate angle of 30 degrees from vertical and boring SB2 was a vertical
boring. Soil samples were collected from the two borings at four-foot intervals in acetate
sampling tubes and were described according to the Unified Soil Classification System. The soil
samples and drill cuttings were characterized for soil type, moisture content, and visual evidence
'wool of petroleum hydrocarbons.
An FID was used as a field-screening device for the detection of petroleum hydrocarbon vapors
in cored samples. Descriptions of soil types encountered and sample collection intervals are
included on the boring logs contained in Appendix B.
Following soil sample collection, the borings SBI and SB2 were backfilled with neat cement
grout to the ground surface.
Ir
On February 23, 1999, ATC supervised the advancement of three soil borings (SB3, SB4, and
S135) in the vicinity former diesel USTs. Drilling was conducted utilizing a hollow stem auger
drill rig. Soil borings S133 through SB5 were advanced and sampled to 36.5 feet bgs. Soil
samples were collected at five-foot intervals or significant changes in lithology, using a 2-inch
F diameter split-spoon sampler containing three brass tubes. A field geologist logged drill cuttings
L- and soil samples utilizing the Unified Soil Classification System.
A flame ionization detection meter (FID) was used as a field-screening device for the detection
` of petroleum hydrocarbon vapors in drill cuttings and cored soil samples. Descriptions of soil
types encountered and sample collection intervals are included on the boring logs contained in
Appendix B.
w:1172921repoM\sumwel.doc 3
V
