Auburn Blvd., Suite A
Sacramento, CA 95821
111NICliLIERNIR
E-f"f ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES Telephone: (916) 485-7222
FAX: (916)485-8098
rs.1
26 March 1991
a Mr. Charles Leubner
Stockton Unified School District
1932 N. El Pinal Drive
r: Stockton, California 95205
Subject: Removal of Underground Storage Tanks
and Piping at Corporation Yard
Stockton Unified School District
HLI 0089002
Dear Mr. Leubner,
On 14 January 1991, Helmick and Lerner, Inc. was present during the removal of three
1-, underground storage tanks and piping from the Stockton Unified School District (SUSD)
Corp Yard located at 1932 N. EI Pinal in Stockton, California. The removal of the tanks
was performed by Stockton Service Station Equipment Company, Inc. of Stockton,
California. The location of the tanks is shown in Figure 1. Presented below is a summary
of observations noted regarding the extent of soil containing petroleum hydrocarbons that
was encountered during the tank removals and the results of laboratory analyses of samples
collected from the excavation.
SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Due to safety considerations, the soil samples obtained for laboratory analysis from the
excavations were collected from the backhoe bucket. Samples were collected by scraping
the top several inches of soil off of the soil in the backhoe bucket with a steel trowel. The
exposed soil was then quickly collected by driving a core sampler containing a brass liner
into the soil using a slide-hammer. The brass liner was then removed from the core
-_ sampler and the ends of the liner were covered with sheets of Teflon and capped with snug-
fitting plastic caps. The samples were then labelled with a unique sample number, date and
r- time sampled, and placed in a chilled ice cooler for transport to a State-certified
-- laboratory for analysis. A copy of the chain-of-custody form that accompanied the samples
is attached to this letter.
Samples from below the piping of the waste oil and solvent tanks, and from beneath the
diesel remote fill lines were collected by driving the core sampler directly into the native
.: soil beneath the piping. The samples were then labelled and prepared for transportation
`,f:_ in a manner identical to the samples collected from the excavations.
