HfIKlEXIfRmfA
_ f Mr. Charles Leubner
`f 26 March 1991
- Page 4
1,000-Gallon Waste Oil Tank
No petroleum hydrocarbons or aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and
xylenes) were detected in the samples collected from the 1,000-gallon waste-oil tank (Tank
! ..I No. 8) excavation. Only nickel and zinc were detected in the WET extract, but they were
below the criteria established for hazardous waste.
=i
Remote Fill Line for 10,000-Gallon Diesel Tank
Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel were detected in the samples collected from
beneath the remote fill lines for the 10,000-gallon diesel tanks. Where present,
concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel ranged from 17 mg/Kg to 5,200
1 mg/Kg. Toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were also detected in one of these samples
(No. 066) at concentrations of 70, 760, and 2700 ug/Kg, respectively (see Table 1).
EVALUATION OF SOIL SAMPLING RESULTS
; > A leaching potential analysis was performed for the site using the method outlined in the
October 1989 version of the Leaking Underground Fuel Tank (LUFT) Field Manual. Based
- - on the assumptions shown in Table 2, the site scored 33 points. Using these evaluations it
;- appears that the 53 mg/Kg of total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel reported in the sample
from beneath the piping of Tank Nos. 4 and 5 is below the maximum allowable total
.._ petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel that may be left in the soil. Based on this evaluation, no
further investigations or excavations are warranted at the 500-gallon diesel tank (Tank No.
4), the 500-gallon solvent tank (Tank No. 5), and the 1,000-gallon waste oil tank (Tank No.
8) locations.
Two samples collected from the remote fill lines location on the site (see Figure 3 and
Table 1), exceeded the 100 ppm level of total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel allowable
„i by the teaching potential. It is our recommendation that the School District consult with
the County Health Division to determine if, on the basis of these results, further
investigation of the excavation that formerly contained the 10,000-gallon diesel tanks'
remote fill lines is warranted.
E!
E
— E
s
1
