(AGE) has prepared a status update for the
remedial action at the Elkhorn site. The soil vapor extraction/air-sparging network has fully operated
at the site for nine months. As part of the progression of the SVE/IAS remediation at the site, soil
vapor samples have demonstrated that deduced concentrations of volatile hydrocarbons have been
extracted (reported in Quarterly Report) and fuel consumption has been significant. The current fuel
consumption is beyond the cost effective remediation goals for the site, while system effectiveness
has diminished.
The SVE unit at the site is an internal combustion/dual-catalytic converted extraction system.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) proposes to continue to extract lower concentrations of
hydrocarbons utilizing an active vacuum blower (10 efm). This modification of the remediation
system will continue to allow for the recovery of hydrocarbon vapors, yet at a lower energy cost.
Based on the current concentrations of the extracted soil vapor stream, a discharge permit will not
be required from the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District(APCD), due to low
concentrations of VOCs in the discharge stream(<2 pounds day). An additional three months of soil
vapor extraction will be scheduled to allow for removal of the additional hydrocarbon vapor from
the soil at the site. Soil vapor sampling and monitoring will continue over the three-month period.
CONFIRMATION SOIL SAMPLING
As proposed in the PHS-EHD approved Remedial Action Work Plan-August 1997 dated 1 I August
1997, soil samples will be collected and analyzed to monitor remediation progress/effectiveness.
After approximately six months of operation or efficiency of the SVE trait has declined, confirmation
soil sampling should be performed withing the area of impacted soil (former UST). The confirmation
soil borings will serve to approximate remaining petroleum hydrocarbon levels and determine if
continuing remedial operation is necessary. Samples should be collected using direct push
technology.
4005 North Wilson Way, Stockton. California 95205
Telephone(209)467-1006 FAX(209)467-1118
