19 January 1996
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0118
S(A samples will be collected at five-foot intervals beginning at 10 feet bsg in each boring. Samples
will be collected using a California split-spoon sampler and brass sleeves. The sampler will be driven
by dropping a 140-pound weight from a height of 30 inches. The number of blows required to drive
each 6-inch length of the sampler (blow counts) are to be recorded on the boring logs by an AGE
staff geologist. Upon sample retrieval, the middle brass sleeve will be removed from the sampler.
The ends of the sleeve will be immediately covered with Teflon tape or aluminum sheets, sealed with
plastic end caps, secured with tape and immediately placed in a chilled container for transportation
to a State-certified laboratory. Each sample sleeve will be labeled with the following: boring location,
depth, time, date and sampler's initials.
3.2. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools and brass sleeves used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean
water after washing with a solution of Alconox. All hollow stem augers are steam-cleaned prior to
advancement in each borehole.
3.3. LABORATORY ANALYSIS
Selected soil samples will be analyzed for TPH-g and BTE&X in accordance with EPA methods
8015m and 8020, respectively. Laboratory reports, laboratory quality assurance/quality control
(QA/QC)reports and sample chain of custody documentation will be presented_ in a report with the
findings and recommendations.
At least one sample will be transmitted to Mr. Keith Kaufman, M.S., an independent microbiologist,
and analyzed for physicochemical properties and microbiological enumeration. Data from these
analysis will be used to determine the soils indigenous bacterial populations ability to support
microbiological degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons.
3.4. SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION/IN-SITU AIR SPARGING TEST
To detemtine the feasibility of remedial options at the site, AGE will perform an SVE/IAS pilot test.
The SVE pilot test will be conducted for an eight-hour period at the site; the duration of the IAS pilot
test will be approximately 96-hours (4 days).
For the SVE test, an internal-combustion unit will be used to apply a vacuum to one extraction well.
The induced vacuum will be measured at a second SVE well and several monitoring wells throughout
the site. Soil vapor concentrations from the extraction well will be measured throughout the pilot test.
Four soil vapor samples will also be collected during the pilot test and submitted to a laboratory for
analysis.
