f
27 June 1996
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0118
;r Page 6 of 23
i
test was performed to provide SVE data prior to initiation of a full scale remediation system. The
test was conducted using a VACLEEN 1000 SVE system- manufactured by Environmental
Techniques. The VACLEEN unit consists of a positive-displacement blower, driven by an internal
combustion (IC) engine. Propane was used as a supplemental fuel source to start the engine and
t maintain optimum performance. Hydrocarbon vapors are destructed as part of the internal
combustion process. Emissions from the engine are routed through two catalytic converters to
maximize the destruction rate of the extracted hydrocarbon vapors.
5.1.2. FIELD MEASUREMENTS AND DATA COLLECTION
The test was initiated at 8:00 am and continued for approximately 8 hours. Well VW-1 was used for
the vapor extraction by applying an induced vacuum potential to the casing of VW-1.
The induced vacuum pressure.was monitored at surrounding observation points (VW-2, MW-2 and
MW-3), Air tight well caps pre-connected with Magnehelic vacuum gauges were attached to each
of the observation wells.
A sample port was tapped into the PVC near the wellhead and a portable photo-ionization detector
(PID: Microtip model 1000 calibrated to isobutylene) was used to measure.organic vapor (OV)
concentrations. OV concentrations, as well as induced vacuum at the observation paints, flow rate
-a and RPMs of the SVE unit, were measured at 0.5-hour intervals and logged on field sheets.Pilot test
data are summarized in Table 4. Field data sheets are presented as Appendix F.
5.1.3. . COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF VAPOR SAMPLES
} A total of four(4)vapor samples-fere collected'during the pilot test, Vapor samples.were collected
at two-hour intervals from the inlet of the extraction well to measure hydrocarbon concentrations in
the extracted vapor. The samples were collected in Tedlar bags using an air pump. Samples were
transported under chain-of-custody to MAI. Each sample was analyzed within 72 hours for TPH-g
and BTE&X in accordance with EPA methods 8015m and 8020, respectively.
i 5.2. RESULTS OF SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT TEST .
5.2.1. FIELD MEASUREMENTS
The SVE unit was maintained at approximately 2,000 RPMs. Initial flow rates were measured at 40
scfm(standard cubic feet per minute)and reached 53 scfm after 7.5 hours. OV readings ranged from
--1
