30 October 1998
AGE Project No. 95-0118
=# 3.3. SOIL PROFILE
Silt and silty-clay were encountered during drilling of the wells from the surface to a depth of 15
feet. Inter-bedded silty-clays and fine-to coarse-grained sands were present in the borings from 15
to 25 feet in borings. Mostly coarse-grained sands were present in the borings at 35 feet bsg.
Two borings had inter-bedded silty-clays and fine-to coarse-grained sands present at depth of 35 to
44 feet bsg. Samples indicated the presence of silty sands at depths of 40 to 44 feet in one boring and
clay at depths of 44 feet bsg in two other borings. Water was encountered in borings at
approximately 35 feet. No samples were collected from any borings at depths in excess of 44 feet.
3.4. FIELD AND LABORATORY RESULTS OF SOIL SAMPLES
Organic vapor was detected in the soil collected at depth ranging from 10 to 40 feet bsg, in selected
borings. Significant concentrations of organic vapor were measured in soil samples collected from
boring VW5,established west of the former UST and dispenser location. The highest concentration
of vapor was measured in soils from depths of 15 and 20 feet from boring VW5,with measurements
as high as 750 parts per million(ppm). Also soil vapor measured from samples collected from the
saturated zone in borings IAS3 and IAS4 had considerable concentrations of organic compounds,
with measurements as high as 278 ppmv.
Five soil samples were submitted to MAI for analysis.Four soil samples collected from site had
detectable concentrations of TPH-g and each sample had detectable concentrations of BTEX:
TPH-g was detected at concentrations as high as 15,000 parts per million: ppm (reported as
±- milligrams per kilogram) at a depth of 15 feet bsg in boring VW5, which is Iocated directly west of
the former UST area. TPH-g was also detected at a concentration of 87.0 ppm in the soil sample
collected from boring VW5 at a depth of 3 5 feet bsg.
Benzene was not detected in soil samples collected from depths less than 35 feet bsg, while the soil
samples collected from a depth of 35 feet and below had detectable benzene concentrations ranging
from 0.047 ppm to 7.4 ppm. Other BTEX compounds were also detected in borings at concentrations
as high as 2,100 ppm. Laboratory results of soil samples analyzed for petroleum hydrocarbons are
summarized in Table 4. The laboratory reports (MAI Laboratory ID 93028 to 93032), QA/QC
reports and chains-of-custody are included in Appendix D.
4
"r Advanced GcoEn v iron mentid,Inc.
a}
