0
27 November 2001
AGE-NC Project No. 01-0856
tape. As fine-grained soil generally retains contaminants more efficiently than coarse-grained soil,
a sleeve filled with fine-grained soil will be preferentially selected for preservation; if the soil in all
sleeves have similar textures, the second leading sleeve will be selected.
Selected soil hand auger borings will be sampled at 6 inches bsg, 1 foot bsg,3 feet bsg and at 5 feet
bsg using a metric soil sampler loaded with one six-inch brass sleeve. The ends of the sleeve will
be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape.
Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in a chilled container under ice and
transported under chain-of-custodyprocedure to a DHS-certified laboratory. Each sample sleeve will
be labeled with the boring designation, depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Soils encountered in
the borings will be visually classified by an AGE geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System(USCS).Additionally, soil samples will be field screened for the presence of
volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor meter(OVM), equipped with photo-ionization
detector(PID). Soil samples displaying field indications of contamination-staining or positive PID
readings will be preferentially selected for analysis. Shallow soil samples will be selected for
analysis if no field indications are noted.
4.3. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
Prior to use,all sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean water
after being washed with a solution of Alconox. All probing rods will be cleaned prior to
advancement at each probe boring location.
4.4. BORING ABANDONMENT
All probe borings will be permanently sealed to prevent vertical migration of contaminants. Soil
borings shall be abandoned bybackfilling with portland cement from the total depth to surface grade.
Advanced GwEnvironmental,Ine.
