--------
7
Soil & Ground-Water Remediation System
-" The soil and ground-water remediation system will initially consist of the following:
• all existing ground-water monitoring wells
1 • five bioventing wells
• a blower system (regenerative or positive displacement blower and associated controls)
to inject atmospheric air into the subsurface. On-site location of the blower system
compound has not yet been determined
_-, Installation of the bioventing system would commence upon approval of a final remediation
workplan, and the issue of local building and safety permits, if required. Operation and
monitoring of the bioventing system will be evaluated upon completion of in-situ respiration test
report.
In-Situ Respiration Test
i Upon approval of the final workplan, an in-situ respiration test would necessarily be performed
to evaluate bioventing effectiveness and determine the actual and appropriate number of
bioventing wells by measuring soil-gas permeability and microbial activity. An in-situ
" respiration test consists of placing narrowly screened soil-gas monitoring points into the
unsaturated zone and venting these soils with atmospheric air for a given period of time. Four
bioventing wells (BV-1 through BV-4) and a background well (BV-5) would be drilled and
completed for the project and would be used for this test.
After injection of atmospheric air, Oz , CO2 , and TPH-g levels will be measured at approximate
E one-hour intervals for the first four hours of monitoring, then every eight hours to the end of
the first day. Thereafter, measurements of OZ , CO2 , and TPH-g levels would be recorded once
daily for three days depending on the results collected during the first testing-day.
Oxygen, CO2 , and TPH-g levels will be measured using a Landtech GA-90 gas analyzer and
a Foxboro OVA-128 or TVA-1000 utilized in the flame-ionization detector mode, or equivalent.
The monitoring equipment will be calibrated with appropriate calibration gases prior to the test.
SITE EVALUATION STUDY
Upon final workplan approval, a comprehensive, site evaluation study will be conducted to
E` determine the effectiveness of intrinsic remediation. The site evaluation study will be based on
-_ an analysis of historical ground-water monitoring and sampling data collected at the subject site.
j =1
i`JI
-1
J
WW. rutin, Inc.
t Project No. 33016.07
1
December 1995 9
