As a
result of efforts to extinguish the fire, a small volume of Diesel Fuel, Motor Oil, and Antifreeze
from the truck's refrigeration unit was spilled onto the parking lot beneath the truck and trailer.
The approximate site location is indicated on Figure 1, which includes an excerpt of the Terminous
CA USGS 7 'h minute quadrangle sheet (1993 Revision). Since this map as well as more recent
revisions do not show the actual location of the Love's Travel Stop, an aerial photo downloaded
from Google Earth is included on Figure 2 to show that location.
LMH Environmental Inc. of Orangevale CA was authorized to direct the environmental cleanup of
the spill site by Great West Casualty Company, the insurer for Pat Fruth Inc. LMH hired Patriot
Environmental Services (Sacramento office)to complete the cleanup.
The Woodbridge CA Fire Dept. responded to the site to extinguish the fire and noted that an
estimated 15 gallons of Diesel Fuel, 5 gallons of Motor Oil, and 3 gallons of Antifreeze were
spilled onto the asphalt surface of the parking area. Most of these liquids were flushed into a Curb
Inlet for the facility storm drain system located within 50 feet of the location at which the truck
was parked. A Site Utility Master Plan was provided to LMH by Love's, and an excerpt of this
Plan is included on Figure 3. The approximate locations of the parked Pat Fruth truck and the
Storm Drain Drop Inlet are indicated on Figures 2 and 3.
Patriot inspected the storm drain system and found that none of the spilled products had flowed
beyond a second Storm Drain Curb Inlet located 255 feet southwest of the Curb Inlet near the
truck. Patriot opened the lid of a Storm Drain Interceptor located about 50 feet further southwest
of the second Curb Inlet and verified that none of the spilled petroleum products had entered the
Interceptor. The approximate locations of the second Stone Drain Curb Inlet and the Storm Drain
Interceptor are indicated on Figures 2 and 3.
Patriot used a pressure washer to flush residual petroleum products from the parking area to the
facility storm drain system where they could be collected and removed. Patriot used a trailer-
mounted "mini-guzzler" at both Curb Inlets to remove the flushing water and residual petroleum
liquids from the storm drain system. A total of three drums of"oily water" were collected for
disposal. Patriot also collected all of the physical debris and absorbents resulting from the truck
WESTERN REGION •P.O.Box 1164 • Orangevale, CA 95662 • (916)971-2727
EASTERN REGION •PO Box 824• Union,KY 41091 • (859)384-0031
