San Joaquin Workplan
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Augeas Corporation has prepared a workplan for the installation of three
groundwater monitoring wells at the California Natural Products facility
located at 1250 East Lathrop Road in Lathrop, California. The following
proposal summarizes the details of our workplan.
2.0 PROJECT HISTORY
The subject property is situated at 1250 East Lathrop Road in Lathrop,
California. Lathrop is a small rural community located in the southern San
Joaquin county. The subject property is situated in an area of mixed residential
and commercial development. The property is owned by Dr. Cheryl Mitchell
and her husband,Pat Mitchell and has been in the Mitchell family since 1948.
The site contains both producing farmland and a food processing facility on
approximately 14 acres of land in Section 26,Township 1 South,Range 6 East.
In July of 1990,during a site renovation, one 1,000 gallon aboveground storage
tank and associated product piping were removed.A spill report was filed with
San Joaquin County Department of Environmental Health and with Antonia
Vorster of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.A groundwa-
ter and soil contamination assessment workplan was prepared and submitted to
the San Joaquin County Health Department in early August 1990.
Near surface soils in the vicinity of the former tank contain levels of adsorbed
gasoline.Assessment of the areal extent of soil contamination was completed
in September of 1990.Figure 1 shows the location of soil borings, monitoring
wells and an oval shaped area of contamination over 240 feet long by 180 feet
wide. The contaminated zone begins at a depth of approximately 5 feet and
extends downward to the water table, generally at a depth of 15 feet below the
surface.
Three groundwater monitoring wells were installed during this investigation
near the margins of the zone of contamination. Water samples collected from
the two groundwater monitoring wells (MW-1 and MW-3) contained detect-
able levels of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds.
Although the areal and vertical extent of the soil contamination has been
determined, the areal extent of groundwater contamination has not been
completely defined.
Project Number: JOAQ22192 Page 1 of 11
