Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Dear Mr. Knoll:
Re: Groundwater and Soil Contamination Assessment Workplan - California Natural
Products - Lathrop, California
Augeas Corporation is forwarding for your review and consideration the following proposal
to conduct a groundwater and soil contamination assessment at the California Natural
Products facility, 1250 E. Lathrop Avenue, Lathrop, California. The contamination
assessment proposed herein will accommodate all regulatory concerns. Also attached is
a completed permit application for the construction of the proposed groundwater
monitoring wells, and a check for $142.00.
The purpose of the assessment is to determine the lateral and vertical extent of
groundwater and soil contamination in the proximity of the facility's former 1000 gallon
above-ground gasoline tank. An underground product line leading from the tank to the
adjacent pump and dispenser has leaked an unknown amount of fuel which has migrated
through vadose zone soils to the underlying water table. Although the tank was originally
removed for off-site disposal in 1980, the product lines were not removed until July 25,
1990. The soil contamination was discovered during the excavation for a new grain silo.
PRELIMINARY CONTAMINATION ASSESSMENT
Several exploratory trenches were excavated by SEMCO, a local contractor, to evaluate the
vertical extent of contamination in the vicinity of the former gasoline tank. Groundwater
was encountered at a depth of 13 feet beneath the surface. Immediately adjacent to the
former tank and dispenser, gasoline was encountered at one foot below the surface and
extended down to groundwater. Although no water samples were collected, a visible sheen
could be seen on the surface of the water in the backhoe trench. Soil samples collected
from various depths from within this trench registered over 200 ppm on a portable Harlen
2252 Fort Point Drive,Gold River,CA 95670 (916) 639-7587 • FAX(916) 852-1411
