24 August 2000
. AGE-NC Project No 00-0725
' 2.0. PROCEDURES
3 1 PROBE BORING AND SAMPLING
' On 04 May 2000, five soil probe borings (BI through B5) were advanced at the site under
observation by a representative of the PHS-EHD (Figure 2) The probe bonngs for this investigation
t were advanced using a Geoprobe 5400 soil probing machine, which utilizes direct push technology
to reach the desired sampling depths for retrieval The Geoprobe 5400 and operator were supplied
by EnviroProbe of Anaheim, California
tThe probe borings were advanced in the area of the former USTs (boring B2), in the area of the
southern and central dispenser islands (borings B 1 and 133) and at two locations which are in the
' assumed down-gradient location(borings B4 and B5, Figure 2) All borings were advanced to depths
of 20 feet bsg
' Soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals, beginning at a depth of 5 feet bsg from Borings B 1
through B4 Soil samples were obtained using a pre-cleaned, 13/a-inch diameter 2-foot long,
' piston-type sampler(large bore sampler), loaded with four 1-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves After the
sampler was retrieved, the lead brass sleeve was isolated, both ends were covered with aluminum
sheets and sealed with plastic caps The sleeve was then labeled and stored in a chilled container for
' subsequent transport to McCampbell Analytical Laboratory (MAI), a California Department of
Health Services (DHS)-certified analytical laboratory, for analysis
' Grab ground water samples were collected from all borings The ground water samples were
collected by placing clean PVC screen into the borings The samples were then collected by bailing
the wells with 3/8-inch diameter polyethylene tubing fitted with a bailer fitting The ground water
' samples were transferred into 40-m1 EPA-approved volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials containing
0 5 ml 18% hydrochloric acid as a sample preservative The vials were then labeled and placed in
a chilled container for transport to MAI
All probing rods, sampling tools and sample liners used for sample collection were thoroughly rinsed
with clean water after washing with a solution of Alconox prior to each sampling run
3 2 LOGGING ,
' Soil was extruded from a duplicate sample sleeve and screened for the presence of organic vapor
using an organic vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID Thermo
Environmental 580A, 10 0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene), and the readings were recorded on the
boring log The soil was then visually described in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification
System (Appendix A)
