28 December 2004
AGE-NC Project No. 04-1238
LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND GROUND WATER SAMPLES
The collected ground water and soil samples were transported under chain of custody to Cal Tech
Environmental Laboratories (CTEL), a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-
certified analytical laboratory. Selected samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel(TPH-g and TPH-d)by EPA
Method 8015 Modified;
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX) and methyl-tert-butyl-ether
(MTBE)by EPA Method 826013; and
• The fuel additives MTBE, tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (RIPE), ethyl
tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-
DCA) and 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB)by EPA Method 8260B.
FINDINGS
In general, soil encountered at the site was dark brown or orange brown silt, clayey silt or clay. The
soil was predominantly moist, with low to moderate consistency, low to moderate plasticity and low
toughness. Static ground water was measured at approximately 10 to 12 feet bsg.
Petroleum hydrocarbon odors and discoloration were noticed in at least one soil sample collected
from each boring; however, TPH-g(8.0 mg/kg) was detected only in a soil sample collected from
boring B-4 at a depth of 15 feet bsg, and the BTEX compounds toluene (0.010 mg/kg) and xylene
(0.011 mg/kg) were detected only in a soil sample collected from boring B-3 at a depth of
15 feet bsg.
TPH-g was detected in ground water samples collected from borings B-1 through B-4 at
concentrations of 4,700 µg/1, 26,000 µg/1, 11,000 gg/l, and 36,000 µg/1,respectively.
One or more BTEX compounds were detected in ground water samples collected from borings B-1
through B-4, at maximum concentrations of 400µg/1 benzene and 280 µg/1 ethylbenzene in sample
B1-GW and 770 µg/1 toluene and 2,160 µg/1 total xylenes in sample B2-GW.
The fuel additive MTBE was detected in ground water samples collected from borings B-1 and B-2
at concentrations of 65 µg/1 and 150 µg/1,respectively; 1,2-DCA was detected in the ground water
sample collected from boring B-1 at a concentration of 7.3 µg/1.
Advanced GenEnvirmnmental.Inc.
