13 December 2004 <br /> AGE-NC Project No.04-1238 <br /> Page 2 of 5 <br /> The primary hazards of each are identified as follows: <br /> 1. Hydrocarbon fuels-Components of fuels are colorless liquids with strong aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon-like <br /> odors. They are flammable and have low solubility in water. Exposure to these materials in excess of <br /> recommended exposure limits can cause mild eye,nose,and throat irritation and can produce a narcotic effect <br /> on the central nervous system. Symptoms of exposure at these concentrations include headache, nausea, <br /> drowsiness,dizziness,and loss of coordination. Certain components of gasoline(BTE&X etc.)are known or <br /> suspected carcinogens. <br /> The following additional hazards are expected on site:typical workrelated to facility.Noise.falling rods,flying hammer, <br /> snapped cables, etc.on the backhoe/excavator(if applicable). <br /> 5.0. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT <br /> Based on evaluation of potential hazards, the following levels of personal protection have been designated for the <br /> applicable work areas or task: <br /> LOCATION: JOB FUNCTION: LEVELS OF PROTECTION: <br /> Exclusion Zone Drill borings A B C D Other <br /> Reduction Zone Preserve samples A B C D Other <br /> and log borings <br /> Support Zone Support functions A B C D Other <br /> Specific protective equipment for each level of protection used is follows: <br /> hard hat <br /> steel-toed boots <br /> Level D: half-faced respirator(if necessary) <br /> gloves <br /> safety glasses <br /> If air purifying respirators are authorized,organic vapor and dust is the appropriate canister for use with the involved <br /> substances and concentrations.No changes of the specified levels of protection shall be made without the approval of <br /> the site safety officer and the project team leader. <br /> 6.0.
