PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
I
The update report included the results of the June 20, 1996 groundwater sampling event. The
groundwater sample results continue to evidence petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in
monitoring wells: MW2, MW3, MW7, MW8, MW10, and MW12. Please note that monitoring
wells, MW1 - MW10 are screened from 60 to 30 feet and both MW11 and MW12 are screened
from 70 to 50 feet. Since the most recently reported depth to water was from 37.08 to 41.94,
some wells have screened intervals below the current groundwater level. Samples collected from
wells with water above the screened interval may not be representative of conditions at the
capillary fringe/groundwater interface. Also, you should be aware that samples collected from the
other wells may not be as representative as when the screened interval within water was less than
20 feet. Groundwater sampling from screened intervals of greater than 20 feet may result in diluted
samples, depending on the well's lithological environment.
f
The update report also included the results of vapor extraction operational sampling. The vacuums
applied to the three wells used for vapor extraction appear reduced, possibly because of the
increasing groundwater levels which reduce the screened intervals available for vapor extraction.
PHS/EHD recommends that the remaining hydrocarbons be characterized and if necessary that ;
additional vapor extraction wells be installed. Please submit a work plan to drill and sample soil
borings to evaluate the effectiveness of the vapor extraction system that has been operating.
Previously, you,had indicated that magnesium peroxide socks would be placed into MW12 and that
MW2 may be retrofitted for air sparging. Please provide a status update on these proposals.
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division 4
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Marg_7 rio, EHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
I f!
M M\6425 PAC I
c: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB
c: Wendy ',Cohen, CVRWQCB
c: George"Converse, WEGE j
c: Wilbur Smith, Lincoln Properties
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
k
I
f
