Exploratory Borings attd Monitor Well Construction-
WEGF,along with Hogate Drilling, perfornted si,.on site exploratory
borings from Dema ber 1 thru 9, 1988 (B 1,B2, B 3. B4, B5 and 136).
Monitor wells MW-1,mw-2,and MW-3 were constructed fmm borings B4,
'r. B5,and B6 respectively.
Tach boring and well was drilled with a truck-rnoanted drilling rig(Hogate
Drilling) using ten inch hollow stem augers. The drilling rig and augers
were steam cleaned prior to use and All lubricated parts that were to enter or
approach the boring were lubricated with olive oil. 'x he sampling equipment
was steam cleaned between each sampling it tetval.
Boring lags were prepared by a WEGE field geologist who was on site
during the drilling and sampling. The samples were described and
categorized using the Unified Soils Classifintion System and lithologic
descriptions. The results for the exploratory borings are presented in
Appendix A.
Relatively undistu,Lmd soil samples were collected depth f 1 at(borings Bl through B3)and 25 feet (borings through
five-foot intervals thereafter using a California Split Spoon Sampkx
cgnipped with four 2"X6"clean brass sleeves. Borings were advanced to the
desired depth with the hollow stem anger, then the center rod center plug
pilot bit assembly was withdrawn. The sampler, attached to the center rod,
was lowered through the auger to the bottom of the borehole and driven 18"
into the soil with a 140-pound hammer. Prior t. preservation, $ail samples
from each interval were field-checked for the presence of odor, vapor, and
visible staining. Vapor analysis was performed with a hand-Meld
photoionizing detector (PID),which was calibrated daily with a 50 ppm
gasoline vapor standard. At each sample interval the brass sleeve containing
the soil sample with the highest PID reading was immediately preserved and
labeled.
S-Amplcs were preserved by wrapping the sleeve ends with aluminium fail
and capping the ends with plastic caps,,which were secured to the sleeve
with duct tape. 110ch sleeve was labeled with time, date, sample iocatien,
analyses to be mr,and the project name. The sleeve was placed in a zit)
lock bag and then into an ice chest containing dry ice to freeze the samisle
until hand delivered to a state-certified lab.
The remaining sleeved soil samples were labeled and preserved. Later these
samples were tested for HCl reactions, sieve, dilatancy, moisture,
permeability and plasticity using ASTM D2488-94 field analysis procedures.
San Joaquin County Health officials observed the destruction of the borings
and placement of the neat cement sanitary seals in the monitor wells.
15.
